His theory reflects a series of challenges that a child (or adolescent) faces as they grow. Piaget (1976/1978) himself was motivated by a conviction that cognitive development could only be understood as part of a larger evolutionary model. The limits of Piaget could even be said to reflect the limits of the evolutionary model he embraced. Piaget, while a committed evolutionist, was not a Darwinian Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky's Theories on Cognitive Development.

UNESCO (1995). Final report of International Conference on Education, 44th Session, Geneva 3–8 October, 1994. Geneva: UNESCO International Bureau of Education. Piaget and Weil describe three stages of affective relations with one’s country (1951). The first is egocentrism, where the young child’s conception of his nation is based on physical features such as the beauty or friendliness of the people. Despite the fact that children in this stage have very little knowledge about their government or its national groups, and may even be unable to state the name of their own country (Piaget & Weil, 1951). However, from about 5 years of age onwards, children can provide the name of their own country, and begin to categorise themselves as members of their own national group (Barrett, 1996; Wilson, 1998).
The sensorimotor stage is for birth to 2 years, the preoperational stage is for 2 to 6 years, concrete operational stage is for 6 to 12 years, and finally, the formal operational stage represents 12 years and above. Piaget & Weil (1951) hypothesized that as children progress through the three stages their ideas about places move from an extreme form of egocentrism to a nonegocentric form of conceptualization. At the first stage, children lack the requisite decentra-tion to conceive of their town as enclosed in a larg-er whole.
